Coalhurst fire chief to head Jasper dept.

After more than 20 years, Coalhurst Fire Chief Mathew Conte has left the department.

Conte started his new role as the Municipality of Jasper’s fire chief May 10.

“It’s a new opportunity, full-time position, so I wanted to check it out,” said Conte.

Conte originally got his start in firefighting in B.C., as a junior firefighter - alongside his father.

When he moved to Coalhurst in 1999, he missed firefighting and took a position on the fire department as a firefighter, working his way up to chief.

Conte said what he’ll miss most about Coalhurst is the friends and people he has met over the years, and the members of the department were always great to work with, and he enjoyed taking on new projects and working with other departments and municipalities in the area.

While the Town of Coalhurst has not hired his replacement, as of the time of the interview last week, Conte has advised the department to continue to work with their fellow members and take care of the projects on the go.

Coalhust Deputy Chief Mitch Sorseahl will be serving as the acting fire chief until the town makes a decision on Conte’s replacement.
