Decisions

West continued with the heart ace and switched to the ten of clubs. East scored the ace to return a heart, ruffed by partner for a two-trick set.

South had made a good decision to advance to the minor suit game because four spades cannot be defeated. North had promised a strong hand with spade shortness and, therefore, the opponents were known to hold at least a tencard spade fit. South's hand was very unlikely to produce a defensive trick and the real question was -- which red-suit should he choose. He reasonably selected diamonds since partner could potentially hold only three hearts.

Perhaps a better plan would be to venture 4NT forcing North to pick a suit. He would correct a five club advance to five diamonds revealing the red-suits. However, North would actually advance to five diamonds ending the auction. Should West double five diamonds? From his perspective, he could not be certain that the minor suit game would fail. It is possible that either North or South might own a spade void. He elected to pass in the hope of a set. A result of +300 would not have been much of an improvement because West played four spades doubled at many tables.
