New films hit the big screen this weekend at the Movie Mill

Leonard Binning Leonard Binning operates the Movie Mill and is a past president of the Motion Picture Theatre Assoc. of Alberta.

A couple of new films to the big screen this week including the new drama entitled “The Card Counter”. A great cast stars in this 14A rated film that has a violence and disturbing scenes warning. This film is 108 minutes long, and will show daily starting Friday at 12:40, 3:30, 6:35 and 9:20 p.m.

“Redemption is the long game in Paul Schrader’s ‘The Card Counter’. Told with Schrader’s trademark cinematic intensity, the revenge thriller tells the story of an ex-military interrogator turned gambler haunted by the ghosts of his past decisions, and features riveting performances from stars Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe.”

“Tell just wants to play cards. His spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he is approached by Cirk, a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel. Tell sees a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk. Gaining backing from mysterious gambling financier La Linda, Tell takes Cirk with him on the road, going from casino to casino until the unlikely trio set their sights on winning a World Series of poker tournament. But keeping Cirk on the straight-andnarrow proves impossible, dragging Tell back into the darkness of his past.” – Focus Features.

The other film to debut is an interesting documentary entitled “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain”. This film too, is rated 14A with a coarse language, disturbing content warning. It is 118 minutes long and shows daily at 12:20, 3:25 and 9:25 p.m.

“It’s not where you go. It’s what you leave behind... Chef, writer, adventurer, provocateur: Anthony Bourdain lived his life unabashedly. ‘Roadrunner: A

Film About Anthony Bourdain’ is an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at how an anonymous chef became a world-renowned cultural icon. From Academy Awardwinning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?), this unflinching look at Bourdain reverberates with his presence, in his own voice and in the way he indelibly impacted the world around him.” – Focus Features.

And finally, next Wednesday the 29th at 7:30 p.m. the second instalment in our partnership with the University of Lethbridge as we embark upon the ULethbridge Film Series. “The Assistant” will be presented by Dr. Aaron Taylor, a faculty member, with discussion to follow. Full details should be on our website soon. Admission for this series is $8 general, and $5 student/youth.

As a final note, due to the situation imposed by our government currently, we require proof of vaccination, a negative test, or a medical exemption to attend indoor movies. A simple mask is all that is required to pick up any of our snacks (sodas, popcorn, etc.) and to play mini golf. A reminder that our weekly drive-in does not require masking or proof to attend (this week is “Black Widow” Friday at 9:45 p.m.). We trust that you understand and respect our decision to stay financially afloat, as we all hope to get through this latest phase quickly and safely.

We hope to see you at the Movie theatre – where movies are meant to be truly experienced!
