tonight’s PICKS
Book Club
11:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m. on SLICE
Four veteran Oscar- and Emmy-winning actresses clearly have a blast together in director and co-writer Bill Holderman’s 2018 romantic comedy about a quartet of friends (Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen) who read “Fifty Shades of Grey” for their book club and start to consider changing some aspects of their personal relationships. Some critics carped that the script didn’t rise to the talents of these leading ladies, but a sequel was greenlit almost immediately. Don Johnson, Craig T. Nelson and Richard Dreyfuss also star.
Superintelligence
5:10 p.m. on CRV1
Ben Falcone once again directs wife Melissa McCarthy in this 2020 action comedy, in which McCarthy stars as Carol Peters, a woman whose life seems thoroughly ordinary until she starts getting snarky backtalk from her TV, phone and microwave. At first, Carol thinks she’s either being punked or is going insane, but the truth is far more chilling: The world’s first superintelligence (voiced by James Corden) has targeted her for observation as part of its plot to take over the world. Jean Smart, Bobby Cannavale and Brian Tyree Henry co-star.
The Martian
7 p.m. on STRZ1 2 a.m. on STRZ2
Matt Damon earned an Oscar nomination as best actor for his engaging performance in director Ridley Scott’s well-paced 2015 drama based on Andy Weir’s story of an astronaut mistakenly thought dead by the rest of his crew and left behind on Mars. As he uses his ingenuity to survive on the “red planet,” others try to figure out how to bring him home once they realize he’s still alive. The top-flight cast also includes Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
