“Movie: Spontaneous”

Brian Duffield made his directorial debut in this 2020 sci-fi black comedy set at a high school where students have started to explode inexplicably. Living in such a world unsurprisingly fosters a strong “seize the day” attitude within the student body, so it’s not surprising when an unexpected romance blossoms between classmates Mara and Dylan (Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer). Hayley Law and Piper Perabo also star.

“Movie: Vox Lux”

After her star turn as a ballerina in the 2010 thriller “Black Swan,” Natalie Portman took on a similarly tortured character in this 2018 drama in which she plays a successful pop star with a tragic past who finds her comeback threatened by scandal, personal struggles and the pitfalls of fame. Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle and Raffey Cassidy also star.

“Movie: Mortal Kombat”

The videogame on which this 1995 adventure is based drew controversy for its ultraviolent content. For the movie, however, the violence is toned down, coming off more cartoonish than gory. Linden Ashby, Bridgette Wilson and Robin Shou play the three good-guy martial artists who are pitted against the evil forces of sorcerer Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) in a battle for the future of humanity.

“Movie: One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk”

Nunavut filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk (“Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner”) helmed this 2019 drama that was shot in the frozen Arctic and stars Apayata Kotierk (“The Terror”) as an Inuit nomad living off the land who is forced by Canadian officials to assimilate into the white man’s world. Kim Bodnia and Benjamin Kunuk also star.
