Submissions will be edited for length (maximum 150 words) and not all will be published, particularly if they are of similar content, no longer timely, in poor taste, potentially libelous, contain accusations, target specific persons or businesses or where facts cannot be verified. This feature appears each Tuesday in The Herald.

ROAST: To Dan O’Donnell’s letter to the editor. APO and exempt AUPE staff at the U of L have not received salary increases for at least the last five years. This affects their pensionable income. If you google the “Sunshine List for University of Lethbridge” you will see that academic staff in particular have received merit increments every year for the last five years, Dan O’Donnell included. This just doesn’t seem fair to the hard working staff who have not had a pay increase in five years while the cost of living steadily increased - taxes, utilities etc.

TOAST: A toast to everyone who is responsible enough to get the vaccine.

ROAST: Roast to the person roasting Rob Miyashiro saying that if he wins the nomination for the NDP member that this city will be unlivable. Please don’t let the door hit you on the back end on your way out of this fine city.

TOAST: A giant bouquet to anyone understanding what Shannon Phillips has cost the taxpayers of this province particularly while fighting tooth and nail, a faux pas she alone created, involving members of our great police service. Anyone representing me who conducts government business, or anything else, they don’t want the public to see, hear, or know about, doesn’t conduct that business in the most public of places - a restaurant! I sincerely hope the people of West Lethbridge in the next election don’t forget what Shannon Phillips has cost them, with little in return but a monthly diatribe saying not much good about anything, or anyone.

ROAST: How much has our Lethbridge West MLA cost the Lethbridge and Alberta taxpayer? To this young lady and the party she represents it’s all about power, fame and money (your money).

ROAST: To all the people who have not been fully vaccinated, don’t practice social distancing and most of all the apartment owners who are not keeping their buildings clean and as free of COVID-19 as possible and every tenant not masked. Give your heads a shake and think of someone other than yourself.

TOAST: For the Tuesday morning laugh that Rob Miyashiro has

been selected to represent the NDP. When the gig with the NDP fails, may I suggest you try for president of a resurrected Rhinoceros party, or perhaps as representative of the Parti Québécois in Alberta.

ROAST: To city Councillors who want to see dog parks lit up at night. Leave nature natural. Installing lights that shine all night long will have dire consequences for all the creatures that inhabit our parks. Learn about consequences before advocating for something you clearly have no clue about. More than ever, every decision should have environment in mind.

ROAST: NDP and David Suzuki policies and statements are always in lock step. Beware of his wishes for pipelines!

TOAST: To the person who returned my wallet to customer service at Costco on Nov. 22. It’s nice to know there are still honest people in this world.

ROAST: Roast to Prime Minister Trudeau for not going to B.C. to see the disaster these Canadian people are trying to deal with

- it is a shame. Does our Prime Minister only care about eastern Canada? His words are hollow.

TOAST: Toast to MP Rachael Thomas, MLA Nathan Neudorf and Mayor Blaine Hyggen for meeting with veterans and first responders after the Remembrance Day ceremonies. Roast to Shannon Phillips for avoiding the veterans and first responders for another year as has been your consistent practice. Your lack of support is shameful.

ROAST: Roast to Shannon Phillips for what seems to be grandstanding on the shortage of doctors in Lethbridge. How can you claim to be trying to get help for the medical system when you and the NDP knew there was a doctor shortage here when you were in power and you chose not to do anything about it? What about a year ago when you, the NDP and your union bosses were critical of the UCP for enacting lockdowns during the second wave of COVID-19 a year ago? How can a physician feel safe coming here after noting what could be creepy behavior on the part of you, and some of your NDP and union followers on your social media posts?

ROAST: Roast to City of Lethbridge. Administration doesn’t listen and does what they want, where they want. Garbage and recycling are picked up in lanes (alleys) in a great part of the city and then others have front street pickup which is a disaster with the winds that are always blowing. Now you want us to find a place for a third (green) bin and drag it to the front street. Unbelievable! You want us to appreciate what you do -it isn’t easy. You aren’t appreciating and respecting the people who live here.

TOAST: Toast to Harold P. for his letter on the proposed green bins. He is right on and this proposal should be shelved.

ROAST: To Nellie Slingerland’s letter claiming Alberta Healthcare is rife with bullying. Getting tested and vaccinated for COVID is not Communism, bullying, and discrimination - it is a sane public health response to a pandemic that has killed millions of people. It’s called being responsible and caring about others in your community.

Her claim that doctors are leaving Alberta and Bigelow Fowler Clinic is closing because of doctors being bullied to take the vaccine is complete nonsense. I go to that clinic and my physician has explicitly told me that the UCP government cuts in funding and tearing up their contract was going to lead to clinics collapsing and doctors leaving. As of today 99.8% of Alberta physicians have been fully immunized. They did not need to be bullied into it - they chose to use the brain in their heads.

TOAST: To Elizabeth Ginn and her lifelong dedication to animals in need. She founded the Last Chance Cat Ranch and worked tirelessly to save and improve the lives of cats who were discarded, abused, injured, and homeless. I have never met such a selfless champion for animal welfare. I would like to thank Elizabeth and all the wonderful volunteers, fosters, and supporters of the Last Chance Cat Ranch whose compassion and dedication have been a bright light in this city.

ROAST: To the cowardly, heartless people who dump their unwanted pets out in the country. We have lived on an acreage just outside of Lethbridge for 22 years and every single one of our pets have been abandoned out here. Six dogs and 15 cats over the years were left to their own devices or the kindness of strangers. Most were healthy, but others were elderly and had serious medical problems.

Three of the cats had to be euthanized because there was no hope for them. Our pets love us unconditionally; why can’t you return this love to them when it is needed most?

ROAST: Roast to the Lethbridge Police Commission for not doing their job to carry out an investigation that is obviously needed. A further roast to the blind city council appointing Middleton-Hope to the police commission when he has a son on the force.

TOAST: To Tad Mitsui for providing us with humour, this time with his letter to the editor about methane producing cows on Nov. 25.I’m quite sure God is not playing

some sick joke on us, giving us cows only to wipe us out with their flatulence!

ROAST: Having been very sick and on my family doctor’s advice I contacted AHS. After going through my symptoms the nurse suggested I go to the COVID Assessment Centre. Because of my residence on the west side, she also suggested I go by cab. 36St N fine but the location is in and out of the industrial area. Is this the only centre for all of Lethbridge? For a city of this size? Ridiculous!

ROAST: To our new city councilor John Middleton- Hope who is now on the Police Commission. Are you really not going to have a public inquiry into the LPS alleged retaliation attempts? This is unbelievable. I voted for you because I thought you were going to work for the public’s interests. Wouldn’t a public inquiry allow for an open and transparent forum? So disappointed.

ROAST: City waste services. You gave us a blue cart and now we are getting a green one and you are moving cart collection to the front. You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Customers would be more onboard with a pay as you use the blue and green carts and to leave collection in lanes.

ROAST: Roast to some Lethbridge voters who didn’t vote for Harold Pereverseff into council. Toast to Harold Pereverseff for your vision of all the Tarleck tubs that are going to show up on our doorstep. If we aren’t paying more attention, those green or is it blue, tubs are going to be pushed on to us as well as more costs added to our utility expenses. Also why would the city need more trucks to handle tubs of garbage? Use what you already have. I for one, can’t afford any more costs added to my bills. Read Harold’s letter to the editor on Nov. 25. He always has great insights.

ROAST: Roast to the big box store on Mayor Magrath Drive a.k.a. “Super Spreader.” On the weekend, there were an awful lot of anti-maskers shopping there. I thought that was bad enough until I went to the farmer store not too far away. In that store, things were even worse. In the second store, the place was crawling with anti-maskers as they swarmed through the front doors. Totally pathetic and totally unacceptable.

ROAST: I refuse to put on winter tires because: This is my car, my choice, my freedom. The effectiveness of winter tires isn’t proven, unless it’s from studies conducted by the manufacturers (you’re surprised). My neighbour Fernando was in an accident after putting her winter tires on. Some are already at their third game of tires; this proves their inefficiency. We don’t know what they are made of. Tire giants scare us with winter just to get rich. Btw, it was the tire giants who invented snow and spread it at night when you sleep. If I have tires the government can follow me in the snow. Educate yourself, open your eyes, and stop being a sheep! This year winter tires I say no!
