Dummy's ten was covered by the king and ace. Declarer drew trump, ending in dummy, to advance and successfully pass the nine of hearts. A heart to the ace was followed by a club to the king permitting South to dispose of two diamonds on the heart winners. Declarer then played off the last two spades squeezing East in the minors. East was compelled to discard either the ace of diamonds or a club on the last trump. He judged to part with the ace of diamonds but South parted with the ten of clubs to win the last two tricks with the club ace and diamond king for an impressive thirteen tricks. North had disclosed that he was 5-5 in the majors offering partner a choice of games. This information should be sufficient to steer West away from a heart lead. He should not choose a trump and should begin with a diamond for partner's ace.

In this scenario, declarer could bring home the heart suit without loss for twelve tricks but it is also possible that he could lose a heart finishing with only eleven tricks.
